Located on the southwest coast of São Miguel island, in the locality of Ginetes, municipality of Ponta Delgada, Ponta da Ferraria offers a unique coastal experience. Its location is characterized by a rugged and dramatic landscape, where basaltic cliffs meet the Atlantic, shaping a scene of singular beauty and great geological interest.
Ponta da Ferraria is a remarkable result of the intense volcanic activity that shaped the island of São Miguel over the centuries. It formed as a lava delta, a promontory of land extending into the sea, created by the flow of incandescent lava.
This encounter of fire with water gave rise to unique geological phenomena, including a pseudocrater and the thermal water springs that emerge here. The entire area is integrated into the Regional Natural Monument of Pico das Camarinhas and Ponta da Ferraria, recognizing its geological and environmental value.
At the heart of Ponta da Ferraria lies one of the most unique natural pools in the Azores. Here, the Atlantic Ocean water is directly heated by a thermal spring of volcanic origin, allowing for swims in waters tempered by the Earth's heat. It is an opportunity to connect with nature in its purest state, where the mineral-rich waters mix with the salinity of the sea.
The water temperature naturally varies with the tidal flow, generally being warmer at low tide. The site has fixed ropes to assist with movement and safety, due to the rocky bottom and potential ocean currents.
For a comprehensive perspective of this location, the Ponta da Ferraria Viewpoint, also known as the Sabrina Island Viewpoint, offers spectacular views. From this elevated point, it is possible to observe the extent of the lava delta, the rock formations sculpted by the sea, and the deep blue of the ocean.
The Ferraria Lighthouse, a striking construction in the landscape, also stands out in this coastal panorama, contributing to the scenic beauty of the region and offering a point of interest for those who appreciate lighthouse architecture and panoramic views.
Complementing the experience of the natural pools, there is an adjacent thermal complex, the Ferraria Thermal Baths. This space offers an alternative to enjoy the hot waters of volcanic origin, in pools with controlled temperatures, ideal for a moment of relaxation and well-being at any time of the year.
Its salty and sulfur-rich waters are known for their mineral properties. The complex provides a tranquil environment to enjoy the uniqueness of Ferraria's thermal waters, in a natural and serene setting.
