The Poços de São Vicente are located on the north coast of São Miguel Island, in the Azores. This site is situated in the parish of São Vicente Ferreira, municipality of Ponta Delgada, precisely on the border with the parish of Capelas. Its surroundings are characterized by the Azorean coastal landscape, with a coastal road that follows the coastline, inviting tranquil walks and offering unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean.
This complex of natural saltwater pools is a favorite spot for both visitors and local residents. Its uniqueness lies in how the seawater renews itself, flowing through a narrow passage between volcanic rocks, which also form the natural walls of these pools. A part of the Poços is complemented by a concrete structure, creating a more sheltered and safe space, ideal for swimming even on days when the sea is less inviting.
In the clear waters of Poços de São Vicente, it is common to observe small fish swimming, adding a touch of color and life to the bathing environment. The site is suitable for swimming and snorkeling, given the good underwater visibility that allows for the contemplation of coastal marine life. There are two distinct bathing areas: one more sheltered and popular, accessible by stairs, and another in the open sea for those seeking a more direct experience with the ocean.
The safety and usability of Poços de São Vicente were significantly improved through rehabilitation works carried out between 2006 and 2007. This intervention transformed the site into a more welcoming and safe space for everyone, making it a family leisure spot for a large part of the year, provided that sea conditions allow. For the comfort of its visitors, Poços de São Vicente offers essential amenities such as showers, bathrooms, and a parking area.
