The Poças de Vicente Dias are located on the south coast of São Jorge island, in Simão Dias Bay, an area that is part of the locality of Biscoitos, Calheta municipality. This spot offers a panoramic view over the ocean, allowing for the contemplation of Pico and Faial islands, which can be seen across the channel.
This set of natural pools has been sculpted over time by the island's volcanic geology. They are the result of ancient lava flows that reached the coastline and, through the action of wave erosion, gave rise to these unique formations. The absence of sandy areas in the surrounding zone contributes to the marine water filling these pools being remarkably clear and crystalline.
The Poças de Vicente Dias represent a point of interest for those who appreciate geology. On site, it is possible to observe various exposed geological layers, which tell the island's volcanic history. One can distinguish deposits of basaltic rock, grey in color, which constitute the oldest base, overlaid by materials such as pyroclasts and ashes, evidence of ancient eruptions or alluvial deposits resulting from intense rains in mountainous areas. This exposure allows for a visual understanding of the different phases of the territory's formation.
The transparent waters of Poças de Vicente Dias invite the practice of various aquatic activities. The surrounding coast is particularly sought after for diving, both with and without scuba gear, given the visibility and the richness of the underwater environment. Furthermore, the characteristics of the location are equally conducive to the practice of sport fishing, making it a prime spot for enthusiasts of these modalities.
