Located in the village of Furnas, in the municipality of Povoação, on the island of São Miguel, Azores, Poça da Dona Beija is situated in an area of great geothermal activity. The site is part of Lomba das Barracas, an area surrounded by lush vegetation, characteristic of the Azorean landscape. Its position in the locality allows for an immersion in a natural environment, where the presence of thermal springs is a constant in the surroundings.
Poça da Dona Beija offers an environment of deep relaxation, where warm waters emerge naturally from the earth. It is an invitation to take a break, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in an atmosphere of tranquility, far from the daily routine. The experience can be enjoyed both during the day, under natural light, and at night, when the environment gains a different dimension, illuminated in a more intimate way.
The water that feeds the various pools of Poça da Dona Beija originates from the depths of the Furnas volcano, emerging at an average temperature of 39ºC. Its orange hue results from the presence of iron and cyanobacteria, which react with the oxidation of the mineral. There is also a pool with a milder temperature, approximately 28ºC, ideal for contrasting with the warmer waters. The mud present on the walls of the pools is rich in minerals and known for its properties.
The site where Poça da Dona Beija is located today has a history of use dating back to 1988, when it was frequented by a priest and, later, by the local community, who sought the beneficial properties of these waters. Due to safety concerns and increasing demand, the space was requalified, and the pools as we know them today were inaugurated in 2010. The name "Dona Beija" comes from a character in a Brazilian soap opera, whose image in natural waters inspired the designation of this pleasant place.
To make the most of the thermal pool experience, it is recommended to wear dark-colored swimsuits, as the high iron content in the water can stain light-colored fabrics. It is also advisable to avoid wearing jewelry, which may change color due to contact with the water. For greater comfort, visitors are suggested to bring slippers, a towel, and a bathrobe. Children are welcome and should wear appropriate swim diapers if they are babies, always remaining under adult supervision, respecting the tranquility of the space. Individuals with specific health conditions, such as pregnancy or low blood pressure, are advised to consult a healthcare professional before using the pools.
