The Natural Pools of Cais do Mourato are located in a coastal area of the same name, integrated into the locality of Bandeiras, which belongs to the municipality of Madalena. This place offers direct contact with the Atlantic landscape, characteristic of Pico Island.
Its position by the sea provides an unobstructed view of the horizon and a natural setting shaped by volcanic rock, typical of Azorean coasts.
These pools result from the way lava, over time, met the ocean, solidifying and creating natural barriers that form coves and nooks. The island's black basalt gives them a unique aesthetic.
Seawater flows into these rock formations, creating water mirrors that reflect the sky and the surroundings. The constant renewal of the water by the tides contributes to its clarity.
In addition to the bathing formations, the Cais do Mourato area offers a coastal environment conducive to contemplation. The presence of an old pier and a solarium area invites moments of tranquility by the ocean.
It is a place where one can enjoy the sea breeze and the sound of the waves, in a setting of rugged natural beauty, where the volcanic landscape merges with the immensity of the Atlantic.
For safety reasons, motivated by the strong coastal erosion affecting the area, the Natural Pools of Cais do Mourato are currently closed for bathing indefinitely. This measure was implemented to safeguard the well-being of those who visit the site.
However, the remaining pier area and the solarium space remain accessible, allowing visitors to continue to enjoy the beauty of the landscape and the serene environment of this point on the Madalena coast.
