The Areia Funda Natural Pools are located on the western coast of Pico Island, integrated into the Areia Funda area, in the municipality of Madalena. This area is distinguished by its proximity to the ocean and a landscape dominated by volcanic rock formations, characteristic of Azorean geology.
This site is the result of volcanic activity that shaped Pico Island over millions of years. The dark rock formations, composed of solidified lava, created natural depressions and basins along the coastline. These structures were filled by Atlantic waters, giving rise to what became recognized as natural saltwater pools.
Historically, the Areia Funda Natural Pools were appreciated as a bathing area. However, transformations in coastal dynamics, particularly after the completion of port works near Madalena, have influenced the water quality at this spot. Currently, the water conditions may present a greenish appearance and a characteristic odor, which naturally leads visitors to seek other options for swimming on the island.
Despite its current bathing conditions, the area of the Areia Funda Natural Pools retains its value as an element of Pico's coastal landscape. The location offers an opportunity to observe closely the interaction between the sea and the volcanic rocks, which create a unique scenery. The view over the Atlantic and the presence of these geological formations continue to be a point of interest for those who appreciate nature and how the island was sculpted by its volcanoes.
