Situated on the northeast coast of Terceira Island, in the locality of Quatro Ribeiras, within the municipality of Praia da Vitória, this natural swimming pool is found in the area designated Canada do Mar. The site is framed by high cliffs and is part of an area classified as a Site of Community Interest, highlighting its landscape and natural importance.
The uniqueness of the Piscina das Quatro Ribeiras stems from its geological formation. Its natural pools are the result of millennia of marine erosion on volcanic rocks of basaltic origin, once solidified lava. The force of the ocean waves has sculpted these formations over the centuries, creating depressions and cavities that have filled with water, resulting in a unique bathing environment in perfect harmony with the coastal landscape.
The surroundings of Piscina das Quatro Ribeiras are characterized by rich flora, an integral part of the Laurissilva forests, typical of Macaronesia. Among the lush vegetation that develops naturally on the surrounding rocks, it is possible to observe specimens of Azorina vidalii, an endemic plant considered a "living fossil," which finds a suitable habitat here. This environment contributes to the feeling of being immersed in a natural and well-preserved landscape.
The waters of Piscina das Quatro Ribeiras are known for their calmness and transparency, providing inviting conditions for a restful swim. Part of the bathing area is fed by the waters of Ribeira do Urzal, contributing to the renewal and freshness of the pools. The site is recognized for its safety, being particularly suitable for families, and has support infrastructure, such as sanitary facilities and showers, for visitors' comfort.
