The Azorean Volcanological and Geothermal Observatory is located in Atalhada, a pleasant area in the municipality of Lagoa, on São Miguel Island. It is situated on Avenida Vulcanológica, an area notable for its modernity and views that enhance the surrounding landscape's beauty, providing a serene and accessible setting for visitors.
Dedicated to the dissemination of volcanological and geoenvironmental sciences, this observatory plays a central role in understanding Azorean geology. It is a space where the secrets of the archipelago's formation are unveiled, allowing an immersion into the Atlantic geodynamics that shaped these islands. It constitutes one of the notable science centers of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, contributing to the knowledge and valorization of natural heritage.
At the heart of the observatory lies the House of Volcanoes, an exhibition space that invites visitors on a fascinating journey. Exploring its various areas, visitors will find collections of minerals and rocks of educational and patrimonial value, including one of the most impressive collections of hydrothermal minerals in the country, as well as rare specimens from the Azores and distant volcanoes. The journey includes a tunnel where real sounds of volcanic activity can be heard, exhibitions on the Capelinhos volcano, minerals essential to life, volcanoes of the world, and typical Azorean rocks. The experience is enriched by modern multimedia equipment that provides virtual "geological journeys" and real-time access to global volcanic events. Additionally, a private art gallery features paintings, some in an "Italian style," depicting emblematic Azorean eruptions.
Beyond its exhibition aspect, the observatory is a hub for scientific research and development. It houses the International Laboratory of Atlantic Geodynamics (LIGA), equipped with advanced equipment for volcanic monitoring, including a prototype land tide gauge. This center is also committed to geoenvironmental awareness activities through the Lagoa Ecoteca, promoting the protection and valorization of the coastal zone and Azorean ecosystems, emphasizing the commitment to sustainability and understanding the islands' natural environment.
