The Ethnographic Museum of Ribeirinha is located in the parish of Ribeirinha, a quiet area within the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, on Terceira Island. It is situated in the Ladeira Grande area, set in an environment that preserves the island's rural essence, serving as a starting point for understanding local life.

Portrait of Terceirense Rural Life

This cultural space offers a faithful portrait of daily rural life on Terceira Island, with a particular focus on the 19th and 20th centuries. Organized into four thematic sections, the museum recreates the life of a traditional parish house, allowing visitors to observe the architecture, furniture, and clothing of the era.

The exhibition also highlights the work instruments and customs that marked the daily lives of local communities, providing an immersion into the ethnographic traditions and popular music of the region.

Tools and Traditions

Among the exhibited pieces, a significant portion is dedicated to the tools and utensils that shaped rural activity. It is possible to see up close the water mill and the threshing floor, crucial elements for grinding and processing cereals, as well as various agricultural implements that bear witness to fieldwork.

Furthermore, a set of tools associated with the loom illustrates the importance of weaving in the domestic context and in the production of clothing and other essential items for families of the time.

The Institution Behind the Museum

The Ethnographic Museum of Ribeirinha is housed in the facilities of the Grupo Folclórico e Etnográfico da Ribeirinha "Recordar e Conhecer" (Ribeirinha Folklore and Ethnographic Group "To Remember and To Know"). This group, known for its dedication to preserving local traditions, owns the collection and the space.

The museum's inauguration, which took place in 2003, marked an important step in the mission to disseminate and keep alive the cultural heritage of Ribeirinha and Terceira Island.
