The Biscoitos Wine Museum is located in the area known as Canada do Caldeiro, in the locality of Biscoitos, belonging to the municipality of Praia da Vitória, on Terceira Island.
Its location is directly within the area where the traditional viticulture of Biscoitos is developed. This landscape is distinguished by its characteristic low walls of volcanic stone, known as "currais" (corrals), which create a unique scenery and offer protection to the vines.
This museum space was inaugurated in 1990, coinciding with the centenary celebrations of Casa Agrícola Brum, a family that has dedicated generations to wine production in Biscoitos, with emphasis on the figure of Francisco Maria Brum.
The museum aims to present the rich history of wine culture in this area of the island, dating back more than four centuries, highlighting the continuity and tradition that have shaped the landscape and local identity.
By exploring the museum, visitors have the opportunity to go through the different stages that make up the wine production process, from caring for the vine in its characteristic currais to the final transformation of the grape.
The space includes a collection of traditional agricultural tools, essential in vineyard work, as well as areas dedicated to the winery, the distillery, and an ethnographic room that illustrates daily life connected to this culture. It is also possible to observe closely an ampelographic field, where various grape varieties are represented, and discover elements such as old presses, a threshing floor, a haystack, and an 18th-century defense tower, integrated into the property.
The Biscoitos Wine Museum is intimately linked to the actions of the Brotherhood of Verdelho Wine of Biscoitos, which has its headquarters in a typical house within the museum's own property.
This connection highlights the importance of the local community in the preservation and promotion of viticultural culture, with a special focus on Verdelho wine, a grape variety with great tradition and recognition in the Biscoitos region.
