The Tobacco Museum is located in Maia, a parish that stretches across the northern part of São Miguel island, integrated into the municipality of Ribeira Grande. This location is set in a rural environment, characteristic of the Azorean landscapes that historically dedicated themselves to tobacco cultivation. Its position in Maia allows for an understanding of the geographical context where the tobacco agro-industry flourished.
Maia's surroundings, with their typical characteristics of Azorean rural communities, offer a setting that complements the museum's theme, allowing visitors to connect the industrial and agricultural legacy to the surrounding landscape.
The Tobacco Museum occupies the premises that once housed the historic Fábrica de Tabacos da Maia (Maia Tobacco Factory). This manufacturing unit, founded by Manuel Bento Sousa in 1871, played a central role in the local economy for over a century, operating continuously until 1988. Its conversion into a museum is an example of how industrial heritage can be preserved and valued.
The adaptation of the old buildings and cultivation areas allowed for the creation of a place that tells the story of the tobacco agro-industry in the Azores, keeping alive the memory of the processes and techniques that marked the lives of many generations in the region.
A visit to this museum offers a journey through the universe of tobacco, from the raw leaf to the final product. The exhibition allows visitors to explore areas such as the weighing and pressing room, the direct and indirect fire dryers, and the weighbridge, essential elements of the old factory. Each space helps illustrate the complex stages of tobacco production.
In addition to the presentation of the physical spaces, the experience is enriched with resources that recreate the sound and visual environments of the factory in full operation, transporting the visitor to the daily life of that activity. This is, in fact, the only museum in Europe specifically dedicated to the research and dissemination of the tobacco agro-industry, giving it a unique character.
The Tobacco Museum is not just an exhibition space; it also functions as a scientific and cultural institution dedicated to the research, documentation, and conservation of heritage linked to tobacco cultivation. Its objective is to deepen knowledge about this activity and share it, from a perspective of social and local development for rural communities.
The space includes a library and a small auditorium, named “Hermano Mota auditorium,” which can host various activities, including temporary exhibitions. These additions reinforce the museum's role as a meeting point for culture and study, contributing to the revitalization and valorization of the region's historical legacy.
