Explore the ancient ruins of two windmills built in the 20th century, featuring rotating domes brimming with captivating stories from the past.
One of these mills is officially classified as Heritage of Public Value, due to its historical and cultural relevance.
The Arrebentão Mill is located in Lugar do Arrebentão, in the parish of Santa Bárbara. This location offers an authentic view of the rural life of Santa Maria Island.
The history of the Moura Family is deeply rooted in the land and the hospitable tradition of the region. Notable members, such as António Moura and his brother Manuel Freitas Moura, were the last millers in the area.
Even with the presence of the windmills, the family has always dedicated itself to agriculture, cultivating vineyards and producing a peculiar 'vinho de cheiro' wine, something rare on the island these days.
The Arrebentão Windmill also portrays the evolution of agriculture in Santa Maria over time, with a notable increase in meat production, unlike São Miguel Island, famous for its milk production.
