This set of six historic mills is situated along the charming Ribeira de São Francisco, in the picturesque Vila do Porto, Santa Maria Island.
The mills date from the 19th and 20th centuries and are true architectural relics. They are rectangular two-story buildings, with the upper floor serving as housing and part of the structure semi-buried to adapt to the sloping terrain.
The mills have a "caixa do lar" (hearth box) with a rectangular chimney and a semicircular oven. The construction is made of plastered and whitewashed stone masonry, with traditional half-round tile roofs and a simple eave.
It is important to be aware that, unfortunately, the state of conservation of these mills is generally considered poor. Although they originally functioned as water mills and housing, some of them are now used only as residences.
There are bibliographic references and historical documentation about these mills, including an unpublished study from 1997, which can add depth to your visit.
For tourists, a visit to this set of historic mills provides the opportunity to appreciate the traditional architecture of the Azores and understand its historical importance as water mills and housing. Despite the precarious state of conservation, it is a unique chance to admire the ingenuity of the construction.
Remember to be respectful if any of the mills are inhabited. Maintain an adequate distance and enjoy the unique beauty of this part of Santa Maria Island during your visit.
