The Mother Church of Velas, officially designated as the Church of São Jorge, is located in the town of Velas, on the island of São Jorge, Azores. Situated in the urban area of the town, its presence stands out in the local fabric, being an easily identifiable visual landmark for anyone exploring the area.
The church is centrally located within the locality, reflecting its historical and community importance throughout the centuries. Its location in the town allows it to be easily visited as part of a stroll through the locality.
The history of the Mother Church of Velas dates back to ancient times, standing on the same site where, since the mid-15th century, a primitive church dedicated to São Jorge already existed. The construction of the temple visible today began to take shape in the 17th century, specifically in 1664.
Its construction, which began after obtaining the necessary permissions in 1659, lasted for about a decade, with the church being consecrated in 1675. The master responsible for the initial design was the stonemason Francisco Rodrigues. This continuity on the same site, since the earliest settlement of the island, underscores the historical depth and significance of this place for the community of Velas.
The Mother Church of Velas features an interior structure composed of three naves, a typical organization for temples of its era. Upon exploring its space, visitors can appreciate various elements of artistic and architectural interest that bear witness to different phases of its history.
One of the highlights is the altarpiece of the chancel. Inside, attention is also drawn to the side altar with its remarkable coffered vault and the representation of the Blessed Sacrament sculpted in basalt stonework. The two stone pulpits and the pipe organ installed in the choir loft, dated 1865, are other relevant elements. The contemporary stained-glass windows, in turn, add a more recent artistic dimension, depicting scenes alluding to the legend of Saint George.
Associated with the Mother Church of Velas is the Museum of Sacred Art of São Jorge. This museum offers a complement to the temple visit, displaying a collection that illustrates the richness of the island's religious heritage throughout the centuries.
In the museum space, it is possible to observe a varied collection that includes sacred images, silver pieces (such as thuribles and monstrances), sculptures, ceramics, furniture, and photographs. A painting on glass depicting Saint George stands out. The museum also houses an important and recognized historical archive, which documents aspects of the island's ecclesiastical and social life.
