Located in the village of Lomba de São Pedro, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, the Church of São Pedro is a prominent feature in the parish. Set within a vast, wall-enclosed churchyard that offers a space for contemplation, the church fits into the landscape of the north coast of São Miguel island. This setting provides a wide perspective of the surroundings, inviting visitors to the area to take a moment to pause.
The history of the Church of São Pedro dates back to the 16th century, with the documented existence of a hermitage dedicated to the same patron saint as early as 1575. The current building is largely the result of a significant reconstruction in the 19th century, driven by the need for renewal after the original hermitage was severely damaged by seismic events and volcanic eruptions in 1563. Over the decades, the temple has undergone major improvement and restoration works, notably between 1972 and 1990, ensuring its preservation and vitality.
It is also a site with a deep connection to the island's religious and cultural history, having been the birthplace of Mother Teresa da Anunciada, a prominent figure in the Azorean faith. A bust in her honor can be found in the churchyard, celebrating the memory and legacy of this personality associated with the church.
The Church of São Pedro features an architecture that combines influences from the 16th, 18th, and 19th centuries, reflecting the various stages of its evolution. The main façade, light in color, is marked by stonework elements, including pilasters and round-arched portals, which lend grandeur to the structure. The two-level bell tower complements the composition, featuring oval oculi on the first level and arched openings on the upper one, where the bells are housed.
Inside, the space is divided into three harmonious naves, separated by arches resting on robust columns and covered by a remarkable wooden ceiling. The triumphal arch of the chancel, coated in rich gilded woodwork, is one of the focal points, displaying the Portuguese royal coat of arms. Within the temple, the venerated statue of Saint Peter is noteworthy, recognized for its significant artistic and historical value. The side naves house altarpieces also decorated with gilded woodwork, while the pulpit, with its wooden rail and gilded details, and the baptistery, with its false wooden vault, tiles, and stained glass windows, enrich this space of faith and art.
