Lagoa do Paúl is serenely nestled within Pico Island, in the municipality of Lajes do Pico. Situated at a considerable altitude of around 800 meters, this lagoon is part of the Caveiro Partial Natural Forest Reserve, integrating into a vast volcanic mountain range. Its elevated position offers a sense of isolation and immersion in nature, far from urban centers, which contributes to its particularly tranquil and wild environment.
Surrounded by an exuberant green landscape, Lagoa do Paúl is distinguished by its pasture fields dotted with puddles and dense thickets of cedar and broom. The lagoon's high altitude favors the frequent formation of fog, which envelops the location in an atmosphere of mystery and unique beauty. During the summer months, a decrease in water level is commonly observed, which alters the dynamic of its banks, making them a pleasant spot for a break in full contact with nature.
This is a place of great interest for nature lovers, and particularly for those who enjoy birdwatching. Lagoa do Paúl and its surrounding area constitute a rich and diverse habitat, hosting numerous species. It is possible to spot common birds such as the blackbird, wagtail, chiffchaff, and Azores chaffinch, as well as woodcocks and snipes. For more attentive observers, and depending on the season, there is the possibility of finding rarer migratory species, such as the American green-winged teal or the American wigeon. Sometimes, the Azores bat can also be spotted, an endemic species notable for its diurnal behavior.
Lagoa do Paúl holds stories and memories of local life from yesteryear. In the past, this was a vital meeting point for the community's women, who came here to wash their clothes. More than a daily chore, these moments by the lagoon were often marked by lively and joyful conviviality. Today, although human presence is more sporadic (with the occasional visit of a farmer seeking water for cattle), the lagoon maintains its peaceful essence, allowing nature to reign supreme and visitors to feel the deep connection of the place with its past.
