Lagoa Rasa is situated in the central mountains of Flores Island, nestled at an altitude of approximately 600 meters. It is located within the area of the Caldeira Rasa and Caldeira Funda Viewpoint, in the municipality of Lajes das Flores. Its elevated position gives it an atmosphere of tranquility, standing out as a natural point of interest in the island's mountainous landscape.
This mountain lagoon is a characteristic element of the natural richness of Flores Island. Its presence shapes a serene landscape, often enveloped in mist, typical of higher altitudes. It offers visitors the opportunity to appreciate an high-altitude lacustrine ecosystem, marked by the native vegetation surrounding its banks, which reflects the uniqueness of Azorean flora.
Lagoa Rasa represents a highly valuable habitat for local biodiversity. It is a crucial point for the conservation of endemic species, such as the Tarphius floresensis, a forest ground beetle that depends on this environment for survival. Recently, the area has been the focus of significant environmental recovery efforts, including the removal of invasive species, such as ginger lily, and the subsequent planting of native flora. These actions aim to strengthen the ecological balance, contributing to the preservation of plants like the Azorean juniper, Azorean laurel, heather, pé-de-pomba, and patalugo-menor, thus protecting the island's unique natural heritage.
