A Natural Mirror

This is a modest-sized lake, yet of striking natural beauty. Its waters, classified as oligomesotrophic, are home to specific aquatic vegetation, including species like Littorela uniflora and Isoëtes azorica, which contribute to its ecological uniqueness. The surrounding scenery, characterized by the intense green of the trees and the mountainous formations, offers a serene and inviting atmosphere for those seeking a more intimate contact with Azorean nature. Thanks to conservation efforts, the lake has been recovering its importance for avifauna, witnessing the return of species such as the white-cheeked terns, after a long period of absence, which highlights the success of environmental protection initiatives.

From a geological perspective, the lake has a deep connection with the island's formation. It is located in an area of lava flow, resulting from the volcanic activity that shaped the Serra de Santa Bárbara. Interestingly, beneath Lagoa do Negro, the Gruta do Natal (Christmas Cave) develops, a set of lava tubes that serve as vestiges of the ancient volcanic eruptions of the mountain range, revealing the complexity of the substratum where the lake is situated.
