Lagoa do Capitão is situated on Pico Island, in the Azores archipelago, within the municipality of São Roque do Pico. It is located at an average altitude of approximately 826 meters, integrated into the Protected Landscape Area of the Central Zone of the island. This elevated position grants it a unique natural environment and a landscape of great beauty.
From this vantage point, one can enjoy remarkable panoramic views. To the north, the island's slope unfolds, with the town of São Roque do Pico in the background. In the opposite direction, the grand Pico Mountain dominates the horizon, often with its image mirrored in the serene waters of the lagoon, creating an iconic scene of Azorean landscape.
Lagoa do Capitão is the largest lagoon on Pico Island, extending over an area of approximately 2.6 hectares and reaching a maximum depth of 4.5 meters. Despite its size, this lagoon plays a fundamental role in the local ecosystem, functioning as an important strategic reserve of fresh water and contributing to the balance of the island's natural systems.
Its surroundings are enriched by lush vegetation, composed of endemic species from Macaronesia. Elements such as Erica azorica, robust cedars, verdant laurel trees, and characteristic vineyards can be observed, which together form a diverse habitat of great botanical value.
Lagoa do Capitão is a privileged site for wildlife observation, particularly for birds. The diversity of species that find refuge or food here throughout the year makes it a point of interest for nature and ornithology enthusiasts.
Among the birds that can frequently be spotted are the Grey Heron, the Yellow-legged Gull, the Blackbird, the Wagtail, and the Canary. The lagoon also attracts various waterfowl, such as the Teal, the Wigeon, and the Common Coot, as well as birds of prey like the Buzzard. Occasionally, rarer species may be observed, adding an element of surprise to the visit.
