Located in the city of Horta, in the area known as Bairro Capitão Moreira de Carvalho, this garden is situated in a slightly elevated position. This particularity offers visitors a different perspective on Horta's urban surroundings, extending to the sea. It is a place that provides a panoramic view of the maritime landscape and allows one to appreciate the silhouette of Pico Island, dominated by its imposing mountain.
Jardim Florêncio Terra was created in 1857, and is considered one of the oldest on Faial Island. Initially known as "Jardim Público" (Public Garden), it received its current name in 1964. This change was a way to honor Florêncio Terra, a notable figure from Horta, recognized as a writer, publicist, professor, and politician. The garden occupies part of the space where the old Convent and Church of São João once stood, utilizing land that belonged to its enclosure.
This garden features a design that reflects the formal style characteristic of green spaces created in the mid-19th century. Its central element is a small pond, in which there is a period bandstand, surrounded by four statuettes that add a classical touch to the ensemble. A network of paths invites visitors to explore the space, observing the grassy flowerbeds and the arrangement of the trees. The overall atmosphere is one of tranquility, ideal for a moment of pause and contemplation in the heart of the city.
Among the garden's botanical diversity, some specimens deserve particular attention for their antiquity and uniqueness. This is the case for the dragon trees, trees with a peculiar and prehistoric appearance, some of which are very old and considered protected species. There is also a large monkey puzzle tree, a specimen whose size and centenary age make it stand out in the garden's landscape. The presence of these trees contributes to the historical and natural character of the place.
