The University of the Azores Garden is located in the parish of São Pedro, in the city of Ponta Delgada. This green space is integrated into the main campus of the University of the Azores, in an area that, despite being central to the city, provides a more secluded and tranquil environment. It extends along an elongated strip of land, bordered to the north by Rua de São Gonçalo and to the south by Rua da Mãe de Deus, offering a smooth transition between these urban arteries.
This garden has an interesting history dating back to the 19th century. It was initially designed to be the private park of the palace that the 2nd Viscount of Porto Formoso had built. The space, about 1.5 hectares, became part of the University of the Azores in 1976, upon its foundation, marking a new phase in its existence and a renewed purpose.
Currently, the garden functions as a natural complement to the university environment. Besides being a prime location for a break or to enjoy serenity, it plays an active role in the institution's life. Its composition allows for the realization of scientific activities, especially those related to botany and the study of flora, and also serves as a setting for some social events, taking advantage of the beauty and tranquility of its space.
