The Jardim da Praça do Infante is located in the city center of Horta, at the southern tip of Avenida Marginal. It faces the Horta Marina, in an easily accessible area with visible proximity to the seafront.
This space has a long history within Horta's urban context. Although its configuration as a square dates back to 1897, the site was previously known by other names, such as Largo do Infante and, more anciently, Largo de Neptuno. A significant transformation occurred after the 1926 earthquake, which led to the demolition of neighboring buildings and allowed for the garden's expansion. The revitalization carried out in the 1930s shaped its current appearance. It is interesting to note that, in the early 18th century, the sea reached this location, having been pushed back by the construction of a coastal wall and, later, the marina.
Various plant species can be observed in the Jardim da Praça do Infante. By the late 19th century, several trees and palm trees had already been planted to beautify the space. Among the vegetation, large Metrosideros trees stand out. A central element of the garden is the bust dedicated to Prince Henry the Navigator (Infante D. Henrique). This sculpture dates from 1960 and was created by Numídico Bessone.
