The Republic Square Garden is located in a central area of the city of Horta, within the urban zone of Matriz. Its location, associated with Republic Square, positions it as a space for leisure and passage in the heart of the city.
This garden was created at the beginning of the 20th century, in 1903, occupying the land where the former Convent and Church of Glória once stood. These religious buildings were abandoned in 1834, after the extinction of the orders, and were eventually demolished in 1901. Its creation on this site provides a link to the city's historical past. It stands out as one of the oldest gardens on Faial Island.
The Republic Square Garden was designed with an atmosphere that evokes the characteristic romantic style of the 19th century. Although established in the 20th century, its layout seeks to recreate the aesthetic of gardens from that era, inviting visitors to a tranquil and contemplative stroll.
While exploring the garden, visitors can observe elements that enrich the landscape. Prominent features include large tree species, such as the imposing Araucarias, also known as Norfolk Island Pines. These trees punctuate the green spaces, which consist of lawns and flower beds. A lake with winding contours, bordered by volcanic lava stones, adds an aquatic point of interest. The ensemble is completed by a bandstand, also built in 1903, which blends into the garden's atmosphere.
