The Ilhéu da Vila Franca do Campo, a natural point of interest on São Miguel island, is located off the south coast, in front of the town of the same name, in the municipality of Vila Franca do Campo. This small volcanic formation emerges from the Atlantic Ocean a few hundred meters from the coastline, becoming a striking presence in the region's maritime landscape. Its position offers extensive views over the sea and the main island.
This islet is the result of an ancient submerged volcanic crater, shaped over thousands of years by the action of the sea and natural elements. It is characterized by a semicircular, almost perfect shape, enclosing a natural lagoon of clear waters. The connection of this lagoon to the ocean is made through a narrow passage, known as "Boquete", strategically facing north, towards the island's coast, which protects it from wave agitation. The islet is composed mainly of yellowish or brownish volcanic tuffs, also presenting large columnar structures resulting from its geology.
Classified as a Natural Reserve, the Ilhéu da Vila Franca do Campo is a place of great ecological value. The walls of its crater and the outer areas are home to varied endemic vegetation, with species such as cabaceira, heather, vidália, and erva-leiteira. On top of the Ilhéu Grande, a rare specimen of dragon tree can be observed. The islet is also an important nesting territory for various migratory seabirds, such as the Cory's shearwater and the common tern, which find a safe refuge here. Its surrounding waters are rich in marine biodiversity, hosting a variety of mollusks and echinoderms, including some endemic species.
Throughout history, the islet has had various uses, from an attempt to build a sheltered harbor to the planting of vineyards and, later, a whaling lookout point. Its natural importance led to its classification as a Natural Reserve in 1983, and it is now part of the UNESCO Azores Global Geopark, recognizing its geological, biological, historical, and scenic values. There are continuous efforts for the recovery of native vegetation and the improvement of seabird habitats, with programs for invasive flora removal. To protect this sensitive ecosystem, the number of daily visitors is limited, ensuring the preservation of the site.
The inner lagoon of the islet, with its transparent waters and a small beach, offers an inviting setting for swimming and freediving. It is a unique space to relax and enjoy the natural landscape. It is useful to know that the water can be cool and the terrain is rocky, so it is advisable to wear appropriate footwear, such as flip-flops or plastic sandals. Since there are no support services on site, it is recommended to bring essential water and food for the visit. The experience of swimming inside a volcanic crater is one of the highlights of a visit to this islet.
