The Parish Church of Urzelina, also known as the Church of São Mateus, is located in the heart of the parish of São Mateus, in the locality of Urzelina, municipality of Velas, on São Jorge Island, Azores. Its position is privileged, isolated yet central within the urban fabric, facing south, which provides it with unobstructed views. From there, it is possible to contemplate the imposing Pico Island, about fifteen kilometers away, and also glimpse Faial Island, enriching the visitor's experience with striking landscapes of the archipelago.

A Past of Resilience

The history of the Church of São Mateus dates back to the mid-17th century, when Urzelina was elevated to a parish. However, a natural event profoundly transformed its existence: on May 1, 1808, the eruption of the Urzelina Volcano devastated much of the settlement and its original church, of which only the tower remains, a testament to local resilience. The construction of the current temple began after 1822, initiated by Father José António de Barcelos, then vicar. Despite financial difficulties, the community's determination and the significant contribution of the priest allowed for the erection of this new church, a symbol of the ability to rise again in the face of adversity.

Architectural Features

Built throughout the 19th century, the Church of São Mateus features religious architecture characterized by its sobriety and functionality. The building's structure rests on stone masonry walls, a robust and traditional material in Azorean constructions, giving it durability and an intrinsic connection to the island landscape. The roof is tiled, complementing the architectural ensemble with a classic touch. Although the original architect is unknown, the church reflects the construction techniques and predominant style of the period in the region.

An Unexpected Episode

The life of the Church of São Mateus was marked by a notable episode on September 26, 1869. During preparations for the feast in honor of the patron saint, an incident with the lights in the dressing room caused a fire that quickly spread across the temple's ceiling. There was great alarm, with the people filling the church attempting to find safety. However, thanks to the swift intervention of João Borges Cândido da Silveira e Melo, accompanied by philharmonic musicians present at the scene, the fire was quickly brought under control, preventing greater damage and demonstrating the community's unity and courage in times of crisis.
