Situated in the parish of Ribeira Seca, in the municipality of Calheta, São Jorge Island, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem stands in an elevated position, next to a black stone slope typical of the region. Its proximity to a cliff offers an impressive natural setting, with wide views over the coastal landscape and the rural surroundings. The location is tranquil and integrated into a scene where the green of the vegetation contrasts with the black of the volcanic rocks and the white of the facades.
Access to the churchyard allows for contemplation not only of the church's architecture but also of the panoramic beauty of Ribeira Seca, making it a privileged point for appreciating the characteristic geography of São Jorge.
This temple was inaugurated on October 26, 1901, in a ceremony marked by a procession that brought the image of the patron saint from the Church of Santa Catarina da Calheta. The devotion to Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem reflects the local community's strong connection to the sea and protection during crossings and journeys, a deep cultural trait in the Azores islands.
Inside, the pine and mahogany altarpiece, carefully restored in 2001, stands out, as does the polychrome sculpture of the patron saint, dating from the late 19th century and also the subject of the same conservation process.
The white facade, finished with dark stone, highlights the chromatic contrast typical of Azorean constructions. The bell tower, with two bell openings and a pointed roof, gives verticality to the ensemble and stands out on the local horizon. The basalt stone wall and churchyard reinforce the church's integration into the landscape, creating a harmonious visual connection between human work and the natural environment.
Next to the temple is the Império do Espírito Santo do Portal, a testament to the importance of the Holy Spirit festivities in community life. The atmosphere is serene and, on clear days, the view from the churchyard is wide and inspiring.
