The history of the São Roque Parish Church dates back to ancient times. Although the town was established in 1542, records indicate that the first church on the site existed before 1480. The current temple, whose construction began in 1714, was erected on the foundations of its predecessor. One of its highlights is the Chapel of Bom Jesus, whose origins lie in the primitive church of 1480, maintaining the tradition of its existence in the new construction.

Architectural Expression

The São Roque Parish Church stands as a remarkable example of 18th-century Baroque architecture. It is a large building with a floor plan that follows the false Latin cross model. Its facade is flanked by two bell towers, which give it an imposing presence in the urban landscape. Inside, the richness of the Baroque period is fully manifested.

Art and Interior Details

The church's interior reveals an environment of great beauty and artistic detail. The main chapel is particularly impressive, with elaborate gilded woodwork that is one of its most distinctive features. It is said that this chapel and a silver lamp were a gift from King D. João V. The altars, which underwent repairs in 1871, and the religious images of Saint Roch and Saint Anne, enrich the space. An element of particular interest is the Ambo, a pulpit with ivory inlays, a singular work of art that resembles others found in prominent Azorean temples, such as the Angra do Heroísmo Cathedral.
