The Church of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres is located in the locality of Fazenda, an integral part of the municipality of Lajes das Flores, on the stunning Island of Flores, in the Azores. Set within a small urbanization, the church stands out for its central position and the serene environment that surrounds it. It rises on a small, level churchyard, accessible by a few steps, inviting contemplation and integration into the local landscape.
The history of this church has its roots in the late 19th century, reflecting the growth and devotion of the Fazenda community. The first stone for its construction was laid on August 1, 1896, a significant milestone for the inhabitants. Construction continued in the following years, with the nave being completed in 1901 and the chancel in 1904. The work benefited from the mastery of João Jacinto Teixeira and the support of important local figures. The church was solemnly blessed on March 25, 1906, becoming the religious heart of the locality and serving as a reference point for the curacy, which would later be elevated to a parish in 1959.
The Church of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres exhibits revivalist architecture, with its main facade drawing attention due to its facade-tower composition. Notable features include the visible stonework base and the upper part's cladding with monochromatic blue and white patterned tiles, which lend a distinctive touch. The openings, both the central portal and the side windows, feature round arches, some with transoms adorned by polychrome glass that filter light into the interior. Upon entering, visitors discover a single nave with white walls, contrasting with the curved-profile wooden ceiling. The bell tower forms a small narthex at the entrance, and inside, one can observe the spiral stone staircase leading to the choir loft, built of wood with a balustraded guardrail. In the chancel, attention falls on the main altarpiece and the two side altarpieces, all in polychrome and gilded carving, a testament to the sacred art of the era.
