The current church replaced an earlier hermitage, which was severely damaged by the 1867 earthquake. Construction of the new temple began afterwards, reflecting the need for a larger and more resilient place of worship for the growing community of Biscoitos. Over time, it has undergone interventions for maintenance and adaptation.
The church features an architectural style that combines vernacular elements with characteristics of its construction period. The main façade is sober, usually painted white with exposed stonework details or painted a light color. It has a main single-nave body and a prominent bell tower, annexed to the building, which serves as a landmark in the local landscape. The main entrance is marked by a simple portal, surmounted by a window that illuminates the choir loft. The roof is gabled.
Inside, the church maintains the simplicity of its single-nave structure. The space is dominated by the main altar, dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, located in the chancel. There are side altars dedicated to other saints of popular devotion. The ceiling and interior walls are generally white or light-toned, contributing to the brightness of the space. The choir loft is located above the main entrance.
As a parish church, it is the center of religious life in the locality of Biscoitos. It hosts regular liturgical celebrations, such as masses, baptisms, weddings, and funerals. It is also the starting point for processions and other religious festivities that mark the community's calendar, with the Immaculate Heart of Mary as the main patron, celebrated annually.
The Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Biscoitos stands out for its central function in the lives of the inhabitants and for its characteristic architecture of island churches after major earthquakes. Although it is not monumental in scale or excessively ornate, it represents the resilience and faith of the community, being an important historical and cultural element of Biscoitos.
