The Church of Saint Peter is located in the parish of São Pedro, an integral part of the municipality of Vila do Porto, on the Azorean island of Santa Maria. It stands in the area known as Termo da Igreja, on an elevated platform that gives it prominence in the landscape of scattered settlement. A wide set of stairs leads to its churchyard, providing a serene environment and an inviting entrance.
The origin of the Church of Saint Peter dates back to the 16th century, with the existence of a small initial temple dedicated to the saint. In the early 17th century, around 1603, this site acquired the status of a parish, formalized a few years later. Throughout the centuries, the church underwent various transformations, including a significant reconstruction at the end of the 17th century to accommodate population growth. Its current appearance is, in large part, the result of restoration and improvement works carried out in the mid-20th century and in 2007, which preserved its essence while adapting it to modern times.
The Church of Saint Peter features traditional Azorean architecture, marked by its simplicity and functionality. Built of stone masonry, its walls are plastered and painted white, giving it a luminous appearance. The main facade is tripartite and features a segmental arch portal, above which a high choir window stands out. Decorative stonework elements, such as pinnacles, enhance its silhouette. At the top of the facade, a cartouche reveals the insignia of Saint Peter and the year 1762, while the bell tower, added later, bears the date of 1880.
Inside the church, the single nave draws the eye to the chapels and altars, where sacred art plays a prominent role. The walls are enriched by a stone wainscoting, which frames fourteen azulejo panels, illustrating scenes from the Passion of Christ. The chancel arch, dedicated to Saint Peter, is adorned with gilded carving and displays the Portuguese Royal Arms. Among the various images and valuable pieces, a notable ivory crucifix stands out, as well as the images of Saint Joseph and Saint Anne, transferred to this temple in times past. In the sacristy, an elegant 18th-century lavabo is a highlight.
The Church of Saint Peter is not only a place of worship but also a living center of local identity and traditions. Annually, on June 29th, the patron saint's day, Saint Peter, is celebrated with a sung mass and a procession. It is a special occasion when the community unites to adorn the procession route with pine needles (pine leaves), a gesture that symbolizes faith and connection to the land. Next to the church, there is also a space, the "Treatro", traditionally used for the festivities of the Impérios do Espírito Santo (Empires of the Holy Spirit), reinforcing the strong community spirit that surrounds this heritage.
