The Church of São José is located in the parish of Salga, a small village that is part of the municipality of Nordeste, on the vibrant island of São Miguel, in the Azores. Nestled within a landscape that reflects the island's natural beauty, Salga offers a tranquil and genuine atmosphere, characteristic of Azorean communities.

Historical Roots and Devotion

Long before the current Church of São José was built, a primitive hermitage, dedicated to Saint Joseph, already existed on the same site, constructed by the inhabitants of Salga themselves even before 1746. This first edifice arose from the strong desire of the community, which, despite its small size, then consisting of a few dozen houses and about one hundred and sixty people, yearned to have its own place of worship. The residents' commitment was remarkable, as they themselves bore the costs associated with the building, in a true testament to their faith and unity.

The Construction of the Current Church

As years passed and the community grew, the original hermitage became insufficient to accommodate all who sought it. By the 18th century, the need for a larger space was already evident. The first stone for the church we know today was blessed only in 1903, marking the beginning of a new phase. Construction began on land generously donated by local benefactors, Nicolau Tolentino Vaz do Rego and Manuel Jacinto da Costa. The latter, in particular, was known for his great benevolence towards the less fortunate, which led to the site being popularly known as "Casa da Misericórdia" (House of Mercy).

The construction of the Church of São José is an enduring symbol of the solidarity and resilience of the inhabitants of Salga. The work proceeded thanks to the contributions of the residents and, very significantly, also of the Salguenses who emigrated to North America. The bells that today call to prayer, for example, were a gift from compatriots who made a life overseas, reflecting the strong bond and dedication of those who, even far away, maintained their roots and supported their homeland.
