The Church of Santo António is located in the village of Santo António de Nordestinho, an integral part of the municipality of Nordeste, on the stunning island of São Miguel, Azores. Its presence is a landmark in the parish, blending harmoniously with its surroundings, and serves as an invitation to discover community life and the surrounding landscape.
This Portuguese Christian temple is the result of a remarkable history of persistence and faith. Its construction, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, responded to a pressing need of the local population. The old hermitage dedicated to Santo António, which once stood there, had become too small to serve the growing community of the time, which was also far from the parish seat. Its construction symbolizes the importance of a dedicated place of worship for the inhabitants of the parish.
The erection of the current church was a true community undertaking, initiated in 1898 by the Reverend Father Manuel Raposo. Popular involvement was profound and remarkable: men and women from the locality diligently dedicated themselves to the work, from preparing stones to transporting materials, with the aid of ox carts and animals. This collective effort, often accompanied by the chants of the Ave Maria dos Romeiros, underscores the indissoluble bond between the community and its church. The first stone was laid in 1899, and, after a period of intense work, the church was blessed in 1909, culminating a decade of shared dedication and commitment, with the tower being completed in later years.
