Situated in the picturesque parish of Santo Amaro, in the municipality of São Roque do Pico, this church stands at a privileged point on the island. Its location, close to the sea, offers a captivating perspective over the coastal landscape and the village itself, inviting a tranquil appreciation of the natural and urban surroundings.
The Church of Santo Amaro has its deep roots in the 18th century, with the exact date of its founding remaining shrouded in some mystery. However, documents dating back to 1723 already attested to its existence, consolidating its place in local history. This temple is dedicated to Saint Amaro, a figure of particular devotion for the community.
Throughout the centuries, the church's structure witnessed several transformations. After the year 1736, a first rebuilding imparted an architectural design of great simplicity. The original facade featured a main door flanked by two small oculus-shaped windows and was topped by a triangular-shaped carved stone string course. Its tower, although of medium height, remained unfinished at that time.
The passage of time and, in particular, earthquakes, damaged the church, which led to a significant reconstruction in 1951. These restoration works extended to the interior of the temple, which benefited from the introduction of a new pew and the careful restoration of its various altarpieces. These interventions gave the church its current configuration, preserving its essence as a local landmark.
