The Church of Santa Maria Madalena stands in the parish, town, and municipality of Madalena, on Pico Island, Azores. Prominently positioned, it is located at the entrance to the town, next to the port and facing the sea, on a platform that adapts to the terrain's slope, forming a churchyard that offers a serene environment and a visual connection with the surrounding coastal landscape.
This temple, whose precise foundation date is unknown, has undergone notable transformations throughout the centuries. By the end of the 19th century, it was already recognized as the grandest and most magnificent on the island, a result of repairs and a significant alteration to its façade. Originally, the church featured a simpler design, with several doors and windows on two levels, and without the finials on the towers. Its current form is the result of a decision to give it a more elegant and imposing presence, which has become a visual symbol of Madalena.
The exterior of the Church of Santa Maria Madalena is distinguished by its harmonious main façade, entirely covered with monochromatic white tiles, a feature that makes it truly unique in the Azorean architectural landscape. This façade is flanked by two quadrangular bell towers, culminating in pyramidal spires. On the central panel, above the perfect round arch portal, there is a clock, which complements the aesthetics of a building designed to impress those arriving in the town. Attention to detail is evident in the pilasters, friezes, and cornices that adorn the structure.
Upon entering the church, one discovers an interior divided into three naves, separated by arches resting on robust pillars. The side naves house various carved altarpieces, while the central nave features two pulpits. The triumphal arch, preceding the chancel, stands out for its gilded carving, profusely decorated with scrolled acanthus leaves. The chancel is one of the highlights, with its figurative tiles that narrate passages from the life of Saint Mary Magdalene. More recently, beautiful stained-glass windows alluding to the saint have been added, and a rich golden crown was offered for the image of the patron saint, further enriching the artistic heritage of this place of worship.
