Situated in the center of the locality of Pico da Pedra, on the island of São Miguel, this church is a landmark in the urban landscape of the municipality of Ribeira Grande. Its central position gives it a prominent role in the community's life and the parish structure, making it easily identifiable for anyone exploring the area.
The construction of the current Church of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres began in February 1802, being completed a few years later, in 1807. On the main facade, a stone cartouche bears the inscription "1804", probably marking a significant phase of the construction process. Initially a center of worship for a place that was a suffragan of Rabo de Peixe, the church was solemnly blessed in September 1807, with a ceremony attended by notable figures of the time.
The journey of the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres is marked by important moments and donations that enriched its heritage. In 1813, the eucharistic tabernacle was placed here, a significant step for the liturgical life of the temple. Later, in 1836, the church ascended to parish status, solidifying its role in the community. Over the years, it received valuable offerings, such as three bells, the gilding of an altar, and ornaments, donated by English visitors. Other notable contributions include a holy water font and a lavatory basin, as well as valuable liturgical vestments, reflecting the generosity and devotion of local faithful and benefactors.
The church's life is punctuated by religious events that underscore its relevance to the parishioners. Historical moments include the celebration of the first confirmations in 1849, presided over by Bishop D. Frei Estêvão de Jesus Maria. In 1872, for the first time, the Stations of the Cross were established within its premises, a custom that became deeply rooted in local tradition. These events illustrate the church's profound connection to the spiritual and cultural life of Pico da Pedra throughout the centuries.
