The Church of Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos stands in the locality and area with the same name, Aflitos, which is part of the municipality of Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel. Its position is integrated into the dynamic of the local community, serving as a cultural and spiritual reference point in the Azorean landscape.
This temple has its roots in the 18th century, with its construction taking place between the years 1756 and 1778. The initiative was due to Manuel Rodrigues Pinheiro and his wife, D. Francisca Maria Alvredo. Shortly after its erection, the church received significant legacies, intended to ensure its preservation and the regular celebration of masses. Throughout the centuries, the place has been a center of great devotion and a meeting point for pilgrimages, reflecting the faith and traditions of the local population.
The church underwent interventions over time, such as its reconstruction and expansion in the 20th century, as well as the inauguration of the front garden in 1960. These phases contributed to its current form, keeping its importance alive for the community.
The church features an irregularly polygonal plan, consisting of a main nave, a chancel, and lateral annexes. The bell tower stands out, positioned on the left side of the main facade, which is topped with a gable and has a straight lintel portal. Its facades are marked by stonework quoins and cornice finishes, and on the right side, there is a galilee, a space that traditionally welcomed pilgrims.
In the churchyard, an element of special interest is the cruzeiro. This enigmatic cross, known as "Dead Man" or "Lord of the Afflicted", evokes the passion and death of Christ. Beyond their religious significance, these cruzeiros are popular in Portugal, associated with the belief in the protection of souls and the warding off of evil influences. Their presence on the site invites reflection on faith and ancient popular traditions.
