The Church of Our Lady of Aid is located in Prainha de Baixo, a coastal area of the parish of Prainha, in the municipality of São Roque do Pico. This location, situated on Pico Island, Azores, benefits from a position that allows proximity to the sea, contributing to a tranquil environment.

The temple is located in Largo Dr. José Machado Serpa, more commonly known as Largo do Império. Its placement in this square grants it visibility and integrates it into the characteristic landscape of Prainha.

History and Foundation

The history of the Church of Our Lady of Aid dates back to the 18th century, the period when its construction began. Since then, this temple has been a landmark for the local community, witnessing the evolution of the Prainha parish over the centuries.

Its longevity and permanence make the church an element that enriches the historical and cultural narrative of the region, inviting contemplation of its heritage.

Architectural Details

The church features a plan in the shape of a false Latin cross, a layout that grants grandeur to the building. The main facade is marked by the presence of two bell towers that rise symmetrically, contributing to its distinctive silhouette.

Inside, the body of the temple comprises a main nave and two smaller side naves. These are separated from the central nave by five perfect archways, which rest on square-section pillars. Each of the side naves has two rectangular windows, one arched lintel window, and three doors. In the chancel area, where the main altar is located, two side windows and a circular oculus that illuminates the space stand out. The ceiling, made of wood, complements the plastered and whitewashed walls, while the moldings, arches, and pillars maintain exposed stone, adding a contrast of materials. The temple also includes a high choir.
