The Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias is located in Furnas, in the municipality of Povoação, on the island of São Miguel. It is situated in the Furnas Lagoon area, in a peaceful position by the shore, slightly elevated from the water. Its natural surroundings, marked by dense vegetation, contribute to the serene atmosphere of the place.
The construction of this chapel originated from a personal vow. It was commissioned by José do Canto, a prominent figure in 19th-century Azorean society, as a form of gratitude for his wife, Maria Guilhermina's, recovery from illness. The desire to build this temple, dedicated to Our Lady of Victories, was expressed in his will, in case the work was not completed during his lifetime. The couple is buried inside the chapel.
The Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias stands out for its remarkable Neo-Gothic architectural style, an inspiration from grand European cathedrals adapted to a smaller scale. The construction was carried out using local basalt and tuff stonework, crafted by island masters. Exteriorly, the elegant bell tower with its pinnacle and the distinctive ogival arches that characterize this style are prominent features.
Upon visiting the interior of the chapel, one can admire the richness of its decorative elements. The colorful and elaborate stained-glass windows are a highlight, filling the windows with scenes illustrating passages from the life of the Virgin Mary. On the main altar, there is an image of Our Lady made of jasper. The ensemble of details contributes to creating an interior atmosphere of beauty and tranquility.
Due to its historical significance, its distinctive architecture, and the quality of its artistic details, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias is recognized and classified as a Property of Public Interest. It is considered one of the most original and richly detailed temples in the religious architectural heritage of the Azores.
