Situated in the Mirateca urbanization, in the locality of São Mateus, within the municipality of Madalena, on the stunning island of Pico, the São Mateus Lighthouse occupies a privileged position. This lighthouse stands on the Laje do Cavalo, a singular geological formation that gives it a very distinctive coastal setting. Its natural surroundings include the proximity of Porto da Praínha do Galeão, Pontinha das Formigas, and Ponta Alta, locations that contribute to the beauty of the landscape.
From this vantage point, the view over the vast Atlantic Ocean is comprehensive and inspiring. The scenery is enriched by the majestic presence of Mount Pico, which imposingly serves as an impressive backdrop, creating a striking contrast between the blue of the sea, the volcanic coast, and the island's terrestrial grandeur.
The São Mateus Lighthouse was designed to play a fundamental role in maritime navigation. Its construction began in 1956 and was completed the following year, in 1957. Erected by the Administrative Commission for New Facilities for the Navy, its primary purpose has been, since then, to serve as an essential communication signal for navigators approaching or departing the coast of Pico Island.
Currently, the lighthouse demonstrates functional modernization, operating with solar energy. This characteristic not only reflects its adaptation to contemporary technologies but also underscores its continuity as a reliable and sustainable reference point for navigation in the Azorean region.
The structure of the São Mateus Lighthouse, although modest compared to other imposing towers, possesses a notable presence on the coastline. With a height of 13 meters, its luminous focus reaches 15 meters above sea level, projecting its light a considerable distance to guide vessels. The lighthouse's architectural simplicity blends harmoniously with the rocky and wild landscape.
Visiting the São Mateus Lighthouse provides an opportunity to appreciate architecture dedicated to maritime safety and, simultaneously, to contemplate the majesty of Azorean nature. It is a place that invites reflection on the connection between land and sea, offering a unique perspective on the island and its Atlantic horizon.
