The Ribeirinha Lighthouse stands on Ponta da Ribeirinha, an isolated coastal area in the parish of Ribeirinha, municipality of Horta, on Faial Island. Its position, overlooking the ocean, offers a wide perspective over the Atlantic waters and the horizon line. It is a privileged observation point, with unobstructed views of the sea and some of the neighboring islands.
Inaugurated in 1919, the Ribeirinha Lighthouse was for decades an essential reference point for navigation in the region. Its original structure consisted of a square masonry tower, clad in white tiles, about 14 meters high, to which a support building was annexed. However, on July 9, 1998, an earthquake of considerable magnitude struck the island, with its epicenter near Ponta da Ribeirinha. The tremor caused severe damage to the lighthouse's structure, leaving the tower and annexed buildings in ruins. Today, these ruins remain as a vivid memorial to the force of nature and the island's resilience.
Despite the destruction of the original structure, the function of the Ribeirinha Lighthouse as an aid to navigation was not interrupted. In 1999, a new beacon was installed in the vicinity of the ruins. This beacon, a white metal column 5 meters high and powered by solar energy, continues to emit its characteristic light, with groups of three white flashes, ensuring the safety of ships crossing the "Triangle" formed by the islands of Faial, Pico, and São Jorge. In this way, Ribeirinha maintains its role as a maritime reference point.
The area surrounding the Ribeirinha Lighthouse is a place of remarkable natural beauty, ideal for those seeking tranquility and stunning landscapes. From the site, one can enjoy panoramic views of the immense blue Atlantic. On clear days, the landscape extends, revealing the imposing silhouette of Pico Island and the elongated contours of São Jorge Island. Contemplating the ocean from this elevated point provides a sense of vastness and connection with the Atlantic nature.
