Fajã da Caldeira Santo Cristo

Category: Nature > Zoo

District: Açores > Calheta > Fajã da Caldeira Santo Cristo > Fajã da Caldeira de Cima

Location:

Fajã da Caldeira Santo Cristo is located on the north coast of São Jorge Island, in the municipality of Calheta. It is one of the flat land areas formed by landslides of earth and rock at the base of the steep cliffs that characterize this coast. Its secluded position, isolated between the mountains and the sea, lends it a particularly tranquil and distinct atmosphere.

Traditional access to this fajã is via footpaths that descend the escarpment from the top of the island or by sea. This particularity shapes the visitor's experience, intimately connecting them to nature and to hiking through the island's rugged landscape.

Natural Reserve and Lagoon:

Fajã da Caldeira Santo Cristo is classified as a Natural Reserve, recognized for its ecological importance. One of its central features is its inland lagoon. This lagoon is notable for the presence of clam populations, being one of the few Azorean fajãs with this characteristic.

Thanks to its lagoon, the area has been designated a site of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, acknowledging its relevance as a wetland for the conservation of waterfowl and other natural elements. The tranquil waters of the lagoon are inviting for a swim.

Heritage and Devotion:

Upon arriving at the fajã, the Church of Santo Cristo stands out. Blessed in 1835, this church is an important landmark for the local community and the island's inhabitants. It has become a place of devotion, attracting the faithful to fulfill vows or make requests.

The festival in honor of Senhor Santo Cristo, patron of the hermitage, is celebrated annually on the first Sunday of September. This occasion keeps the fajã's religious tradition alive, bringing together people who often traverse the walking trails to participate in the ceremonies and celebrations.

Natural Landscape:

The journey through the fajã reveals several interesting natural elements. There is a spring of crystal-clear water that, along the slope, forms a waterfall before flowing into a natural pool. This waterfall offers a refreshing spot for bathing.

The surrounding landscape is marked by the contrast between the imposing cliffs and the flatness of the fajã by the sea. It is a setting where one can observe various bird species and feel the force of nature that shaped this place. Despite its isolation, various agricultural activities took place here in the past, such as the cultivation of corn, vineyards, and yams, which attest to the former vitality of this community.

Place for Sport and Leisure:

Fajã da Caldeira Santo Cristo is internationally recognized for the conditions it offers for wave sports, namely surfing and bodyboarding. The characteristic swell of this location attracts enthusiasts of these modalities from various parts of the world.

In addition to the waves, the lagoon allows for fishing various species of coastal fish, a traditional activity maintained by locals. The calm waters of the lagoon and its mild temperature also make it pleasant for swimming during the summer months.
