From there, it offers a privileged perspective over the valley and the coast, with views extending to the beauty of the Fajã do Calhau.

The name "Vigia da Baleia" evokes a significant past in the history of the Azores. In the context of the former whaling activity, this was a strategic post. From this point, specialized observers scanned the oceanic horizon in search of different species of cetaceans. Their primary function was to spot the animals and, through specific signals, guide whaling boats in their direction.
