Location

The Porto Pim Whale Factory is located on Faial Island, in Horta, nestled in Porto Pim Bay. This industrial complex is situated on the slopes of the majestic Monte da Guia, a location that integrates it into the natural environment of Faial Natural Park. Its position offers a unique setting, where industrial history meets the beauty of the coastal landscape.

A Maritime Legacy

Built in 1941, the Porto Pim Whale Factory operated for approximately three decades, deeply marking the economic and social history of Faial and the Azores. This was a vital center for the Azorean whaling industry, where sperm whales were processed, contributing to the island's prosperity at the time. The factory's closure in 1974 signaled the end of an era, but the site has been preserved and, since 1984, is recognized as a Property of Public Interest. Currently, the factory has been reborn as a cultural and scientific space, dedicated to the memory of this activity and the study of the sea, under the management of the Azores Sea Observatory.

The Industrial Journey

Upon touring the facilities of the Whale Factory, it is possible to observe most of its original machinery, offering an authentic insight into the whale processing operation. The tour guides visitors through the different areas where each processing phase unfolded, from the exterior flensing platform to the internal sections. Highlights include the Boiler House, with its imposing steam structures, and the Autoclave House, where oil was extracted. The Meal House reveals the advanced technology of the time, with equipment that allowed for automated and continuous production of by-products.

Memory and Knowledge

The Porto Pim Whale Factory houses a museum nucleus dedicated to industrial archaeology and Faial's whaling heritage. In the Patrão Manuel Room, one of the central points, it is possible to contemplate a real sperm whale skeleton, one of the few existing specimens in the Azores, which complements information on the biology and morphology of this species. Also on display is a fossil skull of a whale extinct millions of years ago. The space is enriched by a vast whaling collection, including old vessels and tools, which illustrate the intensity and techniques of whaling in the 20th century. The old Coal Tunnel is now a gallery hosting temporary exhibitions, connecting the industrial past with the dissemination of current topics related to the sea.
