The Chapel of São Salvador is located at the summit of Monte da Ajuda, in the area of Santo Amaro, in the municipality of Santa Cruz da Graciosa. This elevated position offers a unique perspective on the surrounding landscape, allowing one to contemplate the island's verdant expanse and, on days of good visibility, the vast horizon of the Atlantic Ocean.
The location itself invites tranquility and contemplation, being set in an environment of natural beauty that highlights the simplicity of the construction.
This small temple, dedicated to São Salvador, has its roots in the 18th century, with its construction taking place between the years 1709 and 1715. Its structure, approximately six meters long, reflects the characteristic simplicity of traditional Azorean chapels.
Throughout its history, the chapel demonstrated resilience, having been affected by earthquakes shortly after its foundation, still in the same century, which underscores its connection to the island's geological dynamics.
For a significant period, the Chapel of São Salvador was a center of intense religious devotion on Graciosa Island. It was here that a fervent practice related to the image of Our Lady of Fátima was established.
Every year, the image remained in this chapel between May 13th and October 13th, becoming a point of pilgrimage and solace for the faithful, before being transferred to the main temple of the locality.
