The Hermitage of São Jerónimo is located in the Farropo area, in the village of Fenais da Luz, municipality of Ponta Delgada. Situated in an area that reflects local life and the Azorean landscape, it offers an experience of tranquility, far from the faster pace of urban centers. Its position allows for observation of the typical surroundings of São Miguel's parishes.
This hermitage is one of the oldest religious buildings on the island of São Miguel, with its construction dating back to the early 17th century. Over the centuries, the Hermitage of São Jerónimo has been a reference point for the local community, witnessing the faith and evolution of the parish. In 2002, the property was donated to the Ponta Delgada City Council, an important step for the safeguarding and valorization of this secular heritage.
The building features a rectangular plan, composed of a nave and a chancel, with an adjoining sacristy. Its facades are plastered and painted white, a common characteristic in Azorean religious architecture, which gives it a serene and traditional appearance. The main facade, slightly elevated and with a stone base, culminates in a gable crowned by a Latin cross, flanked by volutes, elements that contribute to its visual identity.
The hermitage is dedicated to Saint Jerome, a central figure in the history of Christianity. Born around the year 347, Saint Jerome was a scholar and theologian renowned for his vast work and dedication to contemplative life. One of his most notable contributions was the first translation of the Bible into Latin, known as the Vulgate, which became a fundamental text for the Church and for theological study.
