Nestled on the slope overlooking the ocean, the Hermitage of Santana is located in the urban area of Santana, part of the locality of Santo António, in São Roque do Pico. Its position offers visitors extensive views over the blue sea and the surrounding village landscape, inviting a moment of peaceful observation.
The roots of the Hermitage of Santana date back to the 16th century. Historical documents indicate that the request for its construction was formalized in 1616, with authorization granted in 1636. Its construction is linked to a vow made by Diogo Soares, who, according to tradition, pledged to dedicate this place to Saint Anne. Over the centuries, the hermitage underwent various transformations, resulting in its current configuration where only the original chancel remains.
This temple features typical Azorean architecture, expressed in its construction and simplicity. Inside, it houses three main altars that capture the visitor's attention. On the central altar, the image of Saint Anne stands out, flanked by representations of Saint Joachim, Our Lady of Fátima, Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, and Saint John de Brito. The secondary altars, in turn, are dedicated to the Heart of Jesus and Our Lady of Conception, enriching the space with their symbolism.
The Hermitage of Santana is recognized as a place that invites serenity and contemplation. Each year, on the last Sunday of July, the hermitage becomes the center of a religious festival of great significance. This event of faith and unity attracts numerous pilgrims from all over the island, who travel here, some already during the week preceding the celebration, bearing witness to the deep devotion and the role this space plays in the community.
