The Hermitage of Santa Filomena is located in the locality of Norte Pequeno, in the municipality of Calheta, on the island of São Jorge. This place, known as Fajã da Penedia, is part of the characteristic landscape of the Azorean fajãs, flat areas of land that form at the base of coastal cliffs. The hermitage is thus enveloped by a natural environment that combines the grandeur of volcanic rock with the proximity of the sea.
This hermitage was blessed on May 27, 1889, and has since assumed a central role in the spiritual life of the island. Over many generations, it has been an important pilgrimage destination, attracting devotees from all over São Jorge island. Visits are motivated by the fulfillment of vows or the invocation of new graces, a tradition that remains alive to this day. Annually, on the last Sunday of August, the place comes alive with a large-scale festival, which includes religious celebration, procession, and other popular manifestations, reflecting the profound devotion to Santa Filomena.
The Hermitage of Santa Filomena stands out for its simple and harmonious architecture. The exterior is marked by a notable contrast between the black basalt stonework and the white-painted masonry finishes, revealing meticulous craftsmanship in the stonework. It is particularly interesting to observe the details in the stone around the doors and windows. Above the main entrance, a cross also made of stone, painted white, completes the facade.
Inside, the space presents an atmosphere of simplicity and contemplation. White and grey tones predominate, highlighted by the wood which, retaining its natural color, lends a welcoming touch to the environment, especially in the ceiling timbers. On the main altar, in a small recess, is the image of Santa Filomena, the central point of the devotion surrounding this hermitage.
