Situated in the picturesque parish of Rabo de Peixe, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Rosário (Our Lady of the Rosary) is located in an area known as Alto do Rosário. This elevated position offers a view over the surrounding area of the locality, one of the most populous on the island. The surrounding environment is characteristic of a traditional urban area, with the chapel harmoniously integrated into the local landscape.
Although the exact date of its foundation remains uncertain, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Rosário stands out as one of the oldest temples serving the community of Rabo de Peixe. Historical records indicate its existence as early as the beginning of the 17th century, with references to burials having taken place inside, which underscores its secular importance for the religious and social life of the parish.
For many years, this chapel played a central role in the administration and practice of faith, serving as the seat of the local curacy until the mid-19th century, a period that reflects its relevance in the ecclesiastical structure of the time.
Throughout the centuries, this chapel has demonstrated a remarkable capacity for resilience, having undergone several restoration interventions. In 1830, it underwent a significant reconstruction. However, the need for new repairs arose shortly thereafter, in 1854. On this occasion, the community mobilized to finance the work, which included the use of ashlar stone from Vila Franca and a considerable investment in the painting and gilding of the chancel, a testament to the value attributed to it by its faithful.
Later, in 1947, facing a new state of degradation, other important restoration works were undertaken, with the support of donations from Azorean emigrants residing in North America. This aspect highlights the deep connection between the chapel and the parish's diaspora, demonstrating a sense of belonging and continuous support.
Despite being a chapel of modest dimensions, its exterior and interior reveal details that deserve attention, resulting from the interventions over time that have shaped its aesthetics. On the side façade, an inscription pointing to the year 1910 can be observed, perhaps marking one of its most recent repairs or visible additions that contribute to its visual history.
The chapel is dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Rosário (Our Lady of the Rosary), as its name indicates, this being its primary invocation. However, at certain times, local tradition also associated it with the invocation of Saint Anne, an element that reflects the evolution and richness of popular devotions and religious practices that have developed in this community over the years.
