The Hermitage of Our Lady of Grace is located in the Covas area, which is part of the locality of São Pedro, in the municipality of Vila do Porto, on Santa Maria Island. Its location offers a perspective of the configuration of this part of the Azorean island.
The history of the Hermitage of Our Lady of Grace dates back to the 17th century, specifically to the year 1653. It was during this period that the captain-donee, João Falcão de Sousa, established the endowment for the construction of a primitive hermitage on his estate. This act marks the beginning of a place of devotion that would be consolidated over the centuries. Later, in the 20th century, in 1900, the hermitage was rebuilt, which contributed to its current good state of preservation, keeping its memory and function alive.
The Hermitage of Our Lady of Grace features a construction of stone masonry, plastered and painted. Its plan is rectangular, with the sacristy body adjoined to the left side, giving it a characteristic layout. On the main façade, the main door stands out, flanked by two windows. It is noteworthy that the three lower openings, the door and the two windows, are topped by pointed arches over imposts, a detail that lends a distinctive touch to its aesthetic. The right side façade has a window. The roof is a gable roof, with half-barrel tiles, finished with a traditional double eave.
In addition to the main structure of the hermitage, the complex also includes a copeira, located at the back and on a lower level. This space is of particular relevance, as it is where the traditional Impérios are held. This practice, deeply rooted in Azorean traditions, represents an important cultural and devotional aspect associated with the site, enriching the experience of visitors and offering a glimpse into the island's communal and religious life.
