Situated on the summit of Monte da Senhora da Ajuda, in the locality of Santo Amaro, Santa Cruz da Graciosa, the hermitage enjoys an elevated position. From this point, it is possible to appreciate panoramic views over the town of Santa Cruz and the vast expanse of the ocean surrounding Graciosa Island. The atmosphere is one of tranquility, inviting a pause to contemplate the surrounding landscape.
The history of the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda dates back to the 16th century, when its first temple is believed to have been erected on the site. Its construction is intimately linked to an ancient popular legend, which tells of the mysterious appearance of the image of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda. Over the centuries, the hermitage underwent several conservation and restoration interventions, largely due to the seismic activity of the region, which altered its original conformation.
Inscriptions on site mark important moments in its history, such as the date 1915, which refers to the construction of a cobblestone path leading to the entrance. This hermitage is a testament to the faith and resilience of local communities over time.
The architecture of the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda is unique in the archipelago, being considered one of the best examples of fortified religious architecture existing in the Azores. Its robust structure and the lines of the temple, reminiscent of a small castle, give it a distinct and imposing appearance at the top of the mount. The building is characterized by white plastered walls and visible basalt masonry elements, such as its prominent buttresses.
Inside, the hermitage reveals notable artistic details, such as the wooden ceiling in the main nave. The chancel and the area of the triumphal arch are adorned with panels of 18th-century blue and white tiles, which depict biblical scenes, including the Assumption of the Virgin, the Flight into Egypt, and the Birth of Jesus. The hermitage also has a bell tower, which once housed four bells, and an adjoining "pilgrims' house," which served as support for pilgrims who traveled there in devotion.
